TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE TWENTY-FIRST PARLIAMENT ELECTED 10 JUNE 1922 ======================================================================== The Twenty-First Parliament was opened on 25 July 1922 and was dissolved on 20 April 1925. Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are taken from the "Report on General Election 10th June 1922", presented to the Chief Secretary on 7 September 1922. Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. Candidate full names are from lists published in various newspapers on 17 May 1922. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The formation of a Tasmanian branch of the Country Party in 1921 upset the two-party system which had operated in Tasmania since 1909. Three sitting Nationalist MHAs (Ernest Blyth, William Dixon and Edward Hobbs) contested this election for the new party. Blyth and Hobbs were re- elected. The party won two seats in Darwin and two in Wilmot (all from the Nationalists) and one in Franklin from Labor. This left the Nationalists and Labor with 12 seats each, with five Country Party members and one independent holding the balance. The independent was the former Labor minister Jens Jensen, who generally supported Labor. Walter Lee's Nationalist government remained in office while efforts were made to form a coalition with the Country Party. When Lee failed to achieve this, he resigned, and John Hayes was elected Nationalist leader. Hayes then formed a coalition government with Blyth as a minister. In August 1923 there was a split in the Cabinet that led both Hayes and Blyth to resign. Lee returned to the Nationalist leadership, and formed a new coalition government with Hobbs as the Country Party minister. But in October the government was defeated when Blyth and two Nationalists crossed the floor. Lee was refused a dissolution and resigned. Joe Lyons then formed a minority Labor government, which surprisingly survived until the 1925 election. According to the "Hobart Mercury" (26 October), "Mr Lyons received promises of support from as many as six members on the Nationalist side." This election saw the first three women candidates in a Tasmanian state election. Alicia O'Shea-Petersen and Edith Waterworth contested Denison as independents, and Annette Youl contested Wilmot as a Nationalist. All polled poorly.
