TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE TWENTY-THIRD PARLIAMENT ELECTED 30 MAY 1928 ======================================================================== The Twenty-Third Parliament was opened on 17 July 1928 and was dissolved On 26 March 1931 Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are taken from the "Report on General Election 30th May 1928", presented to the Chief Secretary on 24 September 1928. Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. Candidate full names are from a list published in the "Hobart Mercury", 3 May 1928 Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Lyons Labor government was defeated at this election, losing two seats to finish with 14. The Nationalists won 15 and were supported by a conservative independent. John McPhee formed a Nationalist government which served until the 1931 election. Labor lost the election despite polling a higher primary vote than the Nationalists. Due to leakage of preferences from minor Labor candidates, Labor was unable to translate this lead into seats, falling just short of four quotas in Bass, and winng only two seats in Franklin despite polling three quotas. Two senior Labor figures, Joe Lyons and Allan Guy, resigned in 1929 to enter federal politics. Both left Labor in 1931. Lyons was a non-Labor Prime Minister from 1932 to 1939. Albert Ogilvie succeded Lyons as Labor leader. There were no female candidates at this election.
