TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE TWENTY-SEVENTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 13 DECEMBER 1941 ======================================================================== The Twenty-Seventh Parliament was opened on 10 February 1942 and was dissolved on 29 October 1946 Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are taken from the "Report on General Election 13th December 1941", by Edward Parkes, Chief Electoral Officer. Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. Candidate full names are from a list published in the "Hobart Mercury", 25 November 1941. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Robert Cosgrove led Tasmanian Labor to its greatest ever victory at this wartime election, polling an astonishing 62.6% of the vote asnd winning 20 of the 30 seats. Labor won four seats out of six in each of the five electorates, the only time it achieved this feat. The Nationlists polled three quotas in Wilmot but were unable to secure a third seat as their preferences drifted. On the other hand Labor was not far short of winning five seats in Denison. At this election candidates were grouped by party on the ballot papers for the first time. The order in which groups appeared was decided by lot. This helped voters follow their party tickets and reduced cross- voting. Henry Baker resigned as Nationalist leader in February 1945 and was succeeded by Neil Campbell. There was one female candidate, Sarah Kelly (Labor Denison), who polled poorly.
