TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE TWENTY-EIGHTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 23 NOVEMBER 1946 ======================================================================== The Twenty-Eighth Parliament was opened on 26 February 1947 and was dissolved on 26 July 1948 Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are taken from the "Report on Parliamemtary Elections", 1947, by Edward Parkes, Chief Electoral Officer. Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. Candidate full names are from a list published in the "Hobart Mercury", 7 November 1946. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Robert Cosgrove led Labor to its fourth consecutive victory at this election. Labor polled a majority of the primary vote and retained 16 of its 30 seats, losing four seats compared to Labor's massive win in 1941. Labor retained four seats in Bass, giving it its majority. Remarkably, all four sitting Labor members in Darwin were defeated, replaced by three new Labor members and one Liberal. Three future Premiers, Eric Reece, Angus Bethune and Bill Neilson, were elected at this election. In December 1947, following an adverse finding by a royal commission, Cosgrove was indicted on charges of receiving corrupt payments from several business operators. He immediately resigned, and Edward Brooker formed a new Labor ministry. In February 1948 Cosgrove was acquitted, and returned to office. Neil Campbell remained Liberal leader through this Parliamwnt. There were only two female candidates, one Labor and one Liberal. Both polled poorly.
