TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE THIRTY-THIRD PARLIAMENT ELECTED 2 MAY 1959 ======================================================================== The Thirty-Third Parliament was opened on 2 June 1959 and was dissolved on 2 April 1964. Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are taken from the "Report on Parliamemtary Elections", 1959, by H J Corrigan, Chief Electoral Officer. Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. Since the National Library's Trove newspaper archive ends in 1954, I have been unable to locate a list of candidates for this election. The "Report on Parliamemtary Elections" gives only candidate surnames. Scott and Barbara Bennett's "Biographical Register of the Tasmanian Parliament 1851-1960" gives biographical details of members elected before 1960. From this election onwards, therefore, I have no biographical information other than date and place of birth, which is given at the Parliament of Tasmania website. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Eric Reece led Labor to a ninth successive victory at this election, which saw Labor mark 25 years in government. Both the Labor and Liberal primary votes declined, but Labor still finished ahead of the Liberals. With 17 seats, Labor was one short of a majority in the enlarged House of Assembly, but the ex-Labor minister Reg Turnbull, elected as an independent, supported the government. In October 1961 Turnbull resigned to contest the Senate. The countback was won by Labor's Wallace Fraser, giving Labor 18 seats and a majority until the 1964 election. The Liberal Mabel Miller was re-elected at Franklin, but Millie Best failed to retain her seat at Wilmot. Lynda Heaven contested Franklin for Labor but polled poorly. In 1962 she filled the vacancy caused by John Dwyer's death, becoming the first Labor woman in the House.
