TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE THIRTY-FOURTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 2 MAY 1964 ======================================================================== The Thirty-Fourth Parliament was opened on 26 June 1964 and was dissolved on 11 April 1969. Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are taken from the "Report on Parliamemtary Elections", 1964, by K F Febey, Chief Electoral Officer. Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. Since the National Library's Trove newspaper archive ends in 1954, I have been unable to locate a list of candidates for this election. The "Report on Parliamemtary Elections" gives only candidate surnames. Scott and Barbara Bennett's "Biographical Register of the Tasmanian Parliament 1851-1960" gives biographical details of members elected before 1960. From 1960 onwards, therefore, I have no biographical information other than date and place of birth, which is given at the Parliament of Tasmania website. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Eric Reece led labor to a comfortable victory at this election, with Labor gaining a majority of the primary vote and 19 seats, a gain of two. This was a remarable achievement for a government which had been in office for 30 years. The Liberal vote dropped to below 40%, but the Liberals retained their 16 seats. The Country Party ran candidates for the first time but made little impact. The two female members of the House, Mabel Miller (Liberal) and Lynda Heaven (Labor), were both defeated at Franklin.
