TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE THIRTY-FIFTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 10 MAY 1969 ======================================================================== The Thirty-Fifth Parliament was opened on 17 June 1969 and was dissolved on 15 March 1972. Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are taken from the "Report on Parliamemtary Elections", 1970, by K F Febey, Chief Electoral Officer. Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. Since the National Library's Trove newspaper archive ends in 1954, I have been unable to locate a list of candidates for this election. The "Report on Parliamemtary Elections" gives only candidate surnames. Scott and Barbara Bennett's "Biographical Register of the Tasmanian Parliament 1851-1960" gives biographical details of members elected before 1960. From 1960 onwards, therefore, I have no biographical information other than date and place of birth, which is given at the Parliament of Tasmania website. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ There was a strong swing to the Liberal Party at this election, although Labor still polled more votes, and were just short of a majority vote. Nevertheless Labor lost two seats to the Liberals. The Liberals were aided by the disappearance of the Country Party. But the rebel Liberal Kevin Lyons held his seat for his new Centre Party, giving him the balance of power. Not surprisingly, he chose to support the Liberals, and Angus Bethune formed the first non-Labor government in Tasmania since 1934. The Liberals and Centre Party polled 50.1% of the primary vote between them, giving the Bethune government a very narrow mandate. In these circumstances Eric Reece stayed on as Labor leader. No women were elected at this election.
