TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE THIRTY-SIXTH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 22 APRIL 1972 ======================================================================== The Thirty-Sixth Parliament was opened on 7 June 1972 and was dissolved on 17 November 1976. Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are taken from the "Report on Parliamemtary Elections", 1973, by K F Febey, Chief Electoral Officer. Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. Since the National Library's Trove newspaper archive ends in 1954, I have been unable to locate a list of candidates for this election. The "Report on Parliamemtary Elections" gives only candidate surnames. Scott and Barbara Bennett's "Biographical Register of the Tasmanian Parliament 1851-1960" gives biographical details of members elected before 1960. From 1960 onwards, therefore, I have no biographical information other than date and place of birth, which is given at the Parliament of Tasmania website. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Eric Reece led Labor back into government after only one term in opposition, defeating Angus Bethune's minority Liberal government. Labor polled a substantial majority of the primary vote and won a record 21 seats. Reece gained a personal victory when Labor won five seats in his constituency of Braddon. Reece turned 65 in 1974 and was required by Labor Party rules to retire. He was succeeded by Bill Neilson, who had been the youngest member of the House of Assembly when he was first elected in 1946. Bethune resigned as Liberal leader after the election and was succeeded by Max Bingham. Bethune's Deputy Premier Kevin Lyons did not contest the election and his Centre Party disappeared. The United Tasmania Group (UTG), Tasmania's first environmentalist party, polled a modest 3.9%. No women were elected at this election.
