TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE FORTIETH PARLIAMENT ELECTED 8 FEBRUARY 1986 ======================================================================== The Fortieth Parliament was opened on 12 March 1986 and was dissolved on 18 April 1989 Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are taken from the "Report on Parliamemtary Elections", 1982, by K F Febey, Chief Electoral Officer. Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. Scott and Barbara Bennett's "Biographical Register of the Tasmanian Parliament 1851-1960" gives biographical details of members elected before 1960. From 1960 onwards, therefore, I have no biographical information other than date and place of birth, which is given at the Parliament of Tasmania website. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Robin Gray's Liberal government was comfortably re-elected at this election, polling 54% of the primary vote and retaining their 19 seats. The Liberals failed to win four seats only in Denison, where Dr Bob Brown took votes from both parties. They came close to winning a fifth seat in Braddon. Gray polled a remarkable 42% of the vote in Lyons. Former Liberal Senator Peter Rae topped the poll in Bass. Ken Wriedt resigned as Labor leader immediately after the election. He was succeeded by Neil Batt. Batt resigned in turn in December 1988 and was succeeded by Michael Field.
