TASMANIA ======================================================================== HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ======================================================================== THE FORTY-FIRST PARLIAMENT ELECTED 13 MAY 1989 ======================================================================== The Forty-First Parliament was opened on 28 June 1989 and was dissolved on 2 January 1992 Sources ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting figures are taken from the "Report on Parliamemtary Elections", 1989, by C G Ball, Chief Electoral Officer. Biographies of elected members are from Bennett and the Tasmanian Parliament website. Scott and Barbara Bennett's "Biographical Register of the Tasmanian Parliament 1851-1960" gives biographical details of members elected before 1960. From 1960 onwards, therefore, I have no biographical information other than date and place of birth, which is given at the Parliament of Tasmania website. Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ There was no clear winner of this election, thanks to the rise of Dr Bob Brown's team of "grouped independents," which won a seat in each Division, with Brown topping the poll in Denison. Brown's team won two seats from Labor and one from the Librerals. The Liberals also lost a seat in Franklin to Labor. This left Robin Gray's Liberals with 17 seats, one short of a majority. Gray asked the Governor for a fresh election, but the Governor declined and sent for Michael Field, who was able to form a minority Labor government with Brown's support. The Liberal vote declined by more than 7%, although Gray polled a remarkable 35.7% in Lyons. Peter Rae, who topped the poll in Bass in 1986, lost his seat. Gray resigned as Liberal leader in December 1991 and was succeded by Ray Groom. In December 1991 the "grouped independents" became the "Green independents."
