Northern Metropolitan Region
The Northern Metropolitan Region extends from the central business district to the outer nrthern suburbs
around Craigieburn and South Morang. It falls into two distinct regions. The southern region is a
densely-populated, affluent and multi-cultural area, with formerly working-class areas such as Brunswick and
Northcote now colonised by wealthy professionals. The northern region is also multi-cultural, but largely
working-class. Of the eleven lower-house seats in the Region, all are held by Labor, except Melbourne and
Northcote, which have fallen to the Greens within the past few years.
Not surprisingly, therefore, Northern Metropolitan is the most left-wing of the eight regions. In 2014
it elected two Labor, one Green and one Sex Party, against one Liberal, with the second Liberal losing his seat
to the Sex Party. Jenny Mikakos is Minister for Families and Children, Minister for Youth Affairs and Minister
for Early Childhood Education. Nazih Elasmar is Deputy President of the Legislative Council. Craig Ondarchie
is Shadow Minister for Investment and Jobs and Shadow Minister for Trade. Dr Samantha Ratnam is the Leader of
the Greens in the Legislative Council.
At the 2018 election, Labor, the Greens and the Liberals will all be hoping to claim the seat now held
by Fiona Patten (elected for the Sex Party, now called Fiona Patten's Reason Party).
